Ellsworth County Rock Art Sites Revisited

By Christine Garst

Neither has 14EW14 escaped the public's attention, however its location away from a hiking trail, with its presence no longer being advertised, has limited the damage from grafitti to this site. Sadly though, several of the petroglyps at this site have been spray painted, either in an act of vandalism or in an attempt to make them more readily visible.

Petroglyph at 14EW14 showing what has been called a zoomorphic, a crosshatched figure or an alligator. Viewing it today, we can no longer ascertain what was its creator intended to dipict. Spray paint was added in more recent times and will grealy speed its erosion. "Turkey track" and rectilinear glyph found at 14EW14.

Anthropomorphic glyph at 14EW14, spray painted in recent times.
Second anthropomorphic glyph found at 14EW14, which also has been spray painted. These anthropomorphic figures may represent shamans.
