In the spring of 1998, I visited three
petroglyph sites from
Ellsworth County, Kansas in order to assess the impact of public
accessibility on these sites. 14EW7, featured in state park brochures
and located on a hiking trail, has long been the focus of public
visitation, and some of the petroglyps there are now completely
surrounded by grafitti. In addition, a "new" petroglyph
has been added recently by unknown persons. |

Rock panel at 14EW7 showing glyphs (center and
left) of a circle with four lines emereging from it, commonly
called a "sun" glyph, three groups of vertical lines
and two "turkey tracks." All are highly weathered and
are threatened by the spalling off of a portion of the panel. |
